Ahhh… Mobile Marketing, such an underestimated but strong platform that businesses fail to capitalize on these days.
Narrative
It is 8.30am on a dreading Monday morning.
You, a typical millennial on your way to work, plugging in your favourite playlist on Spotify on your phone and looking out the MRT cabin, thinking about what to eat for lunch, or what to do after work.
Somehow or rather, be it feeling bored or habitual, you decided to whip out your smartphone and start scrolling on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or watch your favourite Kdramas like the rest of the crowd on the same cabin as you – engrossed on this little device that seems to hold so much weight in your lives.
As you were scrolling through your Instagram story, you were rudely interupted by an advertisement of this new watch brand featuring their watches and its aesthetics, you wonder to yourself – “Hey, I was literally searching for watches to gift for my friend the other day, this ad seems to come out just in time!” or “Am I being watched? How did they know what I was looking for?”
Well, every action you make online, everywhere you go, you are constantly leaving bits and pieces of yourselves on the internet, Google takes in these useless data and translates them into information, for businesses to leverage on them for different uses – mostly for marketing/research purposes, relax.
In this post, we will dive into the details of what mobile marketing is, how much of an impact it is creating in our lives and for our future, and steps that businesses can use to achieve mobile marketing success.
What exactly is Mobile Marketing?

Mobile Marketing, in its essence, is a multi-channel, digital media strategy aimed for delivering marketing content to end-users through their mobile phones, tablets and other mobile devices. Common platforms for mobile marketing includes:
– Websites
– Emails
– Social Media (Whatsapp, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, etc)
– SMS/MMS
– Apps
Impact of Mobile Internet
Did you know that there are close to 8 billion (7.8 billion to be exact) people in the world, more than half (4.33 billion) of them uses the internet, and 80% of these internet users have smartphones?
It is also reflected on Statista that the Mobile internet traffic takes up more than half (51.98%) of the Total Global online traffic. This goes to show how much of an impact mobile internet is making across the world!!
So what has it got to do with marketing/business? you asked. Well, you see, it is important for businesses to recognize the different channels of distribution that they can use to put themselves out there. Since more and more people are gradually shifting to mobile internet, businesses also need to understand how to use these platforms to deliver marketing contents to their intended users effectively.

Hello Jason!
Its really true that when i use my phone and all those funny ads appear and kinda disrupt whatever i was doing! To be honest, i never thought of it as a marketing technique as it didn’t really cross my mind at all. But now, if i was a marketer i would find this strategy very good and useful as it really helps me achieve great reach to consumers and the public! But yes, of course i would have to use your 5 steps accordingly as well! Personally, I think cookies do play a part as well! What do you think?

I am now much more aware of exactly why do such advertisements constantly disrupt me when I am using my mobile phone… especially when all of them are related to my searches that constantly distracts me! Great write-up on the mobile marketing debate! I think it is a good marketing channel for brands to gain brand recognition because 80% of internet users own a smartphone. I personally chanced through their mobile ad on a watch brand and have since become a regular customer for them! It is also a cheaper option than advertising via billboards, tv commercials, etc.
Hence, I feel that today’s brands should consider mobile marketing as one of the brand recognition options!!

Thank you for your inputs, Joshua!
There are boundless opportunities with mobile marketing! Like what you mentioned, its ability to reach out to as many possible people with as little cost (compared to traditional marketing) is a great feat that attracts many businesses to flock in! Businesses can now find cheaper alternatives to reach out to their target audiences! But we do have to be careful on certain issues such as privacy, where most of the time we have to sign up and fill in our credentials in order to purchase something or subscribe!
