A mobile phone with access to internet? A digital watch with access to internet? Very common these days, ain’t it?
But did you know that some time back, the only device that can grant us access to tons of information in a matter of seconds with just a simple click, was the Computer?
Welcome to the Digital Age – IoT
In this post, I will be sharing how the digitalization, or specifically, the Internet of Things, is shaping our world, one product at a time.
What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?
The Internet of Things (IoT), termed by Kevin Ashton, is an ecosystem of physical devices, appliances, even vehicles, that have an ability to access, collect and exchange information over a wired or wireless network. Empowering day to day objects and devices with access to the internet via ubiquitous sensors, to facilitate information collection and exchange.

How does it work?

4. User Interface – With the relevant data converted to information and displayed on the device (e.g. smartphone application), an end-user can then choose to make the decision to tune its setting or to monitor the situation!

Innovation – Everything You Ever Need?
Well, if this is what you came for, let me introduce some innovations that you might or might not have known, that are probably going to integrate into our everyday living, sometime in the future!
1. Smart Home
Using a digital lock to control access to your house through a passcode or fingerprint scanner, controlling your home lighting, sounds, the blinds, with just a click on your smartphone. From the Google Alexa Mini Speakers to the Samsung Smart Home Refridgerator, there are just too many products available to ease your needs with living! Below is a video that illustrates the endless possibilities of the IoT!
2. Wearables
Smart watches like the Apple Watch, Fitness tracking bands like Fitbit are getting increasingly popular in the digital tech markets, with more and more people adopting these devices into their routine – you can pay, make phone calls, track your health, etc with these little devices that you carry with you on your way to work!

Bose SoundWear Companion Speaker allows its users to use them hands and ears free, they allow users to be present with music and their surroundings, maximizing the sound quality for its users and minimizing the sound for others.
3. Smart Cities
Can you imagine a city powered by Artificial Intelligence? Driverless cars around the area, controlled traffic, all connected to a centralized network, seems pretty futuristic right? Something like this?
Well, not quite, but lets not limit our possibilities! I was talking about something more along the lines of this!

In less than 2 decades, we saw the evolution of technology spurt across the world, and the IoT might just be the biggest thing to happen for us. Can you imagine a world where all households will incorporate smart home systems, driverless cars moving about everywhere, a society empowered by digitalization, all connected across multiple networks?
New Innovations? Contact Lens with internet access? A earpiece that allows you to hear from 3,000miles? We never know, but we sure need to be ready for the change though, just like how smartphones topped across the world in less than a year and became something we can’t live without.

Hi Jason
The effect of the Internet and digitalisation is astounding and has truly changed the world. While smart homes and wearables already exist, smart cities don’t exist at this point sadly. I feel that smart cities are a really exciting possibility but it might cost millions of dollars in construction hence not all cities can afford it! But I’ll love to see it as a reality especially in Singapore!
Other ideas I have for innovations will be voice recognition software and self-driving cars. A current reality would be Audi’s self-parking cars. IoT is definitely exciting but its scary to think that companies or individuals can collect so much of our personal information. Imagine the personal data stored in your smart home falling into the wrong hands!

Hey Bryan!
Thank you for the positive feedback! I am as excited as you for what the future holds for our beloved country! Singapore definitely has been taking big steps to incorporate digitalization onto their assets, take a trip around the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore and check out some of their cool innovations and measures undertaken by the government to bring our Singapore closer to becoming a SmartNation!
Well, with all these new innovations and vast amounts of personal data being transmitted over the internet, it is common for us to be afraid of our personal information being misused. However, I believe that the government is taking their precautionary measures towards our data privacy, as can be seen by the recent regulation of PDPA within Singapore and its organisations, and these efforts help to boost the trust that we as Singaporeans have for our country’s system. Lets keep our head high about it, Bryan! 🙂

Hey Jason, love the post! With IoT everything is connected and easier to access. I think in Singapore an important innovation of this technology is agriculture. I’m talking about the ability to grow food in smaller soaces and more quickly. This would improve Singapore to be more self-sustainable!

Hey Daniel, that is a wonderful idea that I believe we should look further into! I do know of certain technological efforts in improving Singapore’s agriculture industry through new innovations, and having local consumers and businesses supporting these organic produces! With IoT in mind, opportunities for new developments in that field are boundless, we can look into sensors that facilitate to self-water crops, or even help to detect abnormality and empower farmers with single access controls within these integrated systems!

Hi Jason, thanks for such an informative post on Internet of Things! I have heard of smart homes and smart wearable devices but a smart city? Now that’s innovative. With the rise of driverless cars in the world, Singapore is no stranger to implenting such IoT devices. My question is, do you think a concept like a smart city where everything is automated is feasible in Singapore?

Hey Marcus, thank you for the support as well as such a brilliant question! I agree for a fact that Singapore has been moving at a fast pace when it comes to incorporating new technologies into our living standards. However, I believe that every move that Singapore makes are precise and strategically well-thought out – they probably would wait out for more concrete and viable instances before a new technology is adapted, regardless of the industry! I will not rule out the possibility that everything might become automated in Singapore, and I would think it would be feasible to a large extent, to better improve the living standards of Singaporeans. As I have mentioned, these plans would have been well thought out before it can be carried out! There might probably be some hiccups at the start, but I believe evolving alongside globalisation should be the way to go!

Hi Jason, your post is really informative with all the examples given. I have heard and seen review about driverless car. It is a blessing because it definitely minimises the chance of accident occuring due to the technology and automates sensor. Contact lens with internet access would be really cool. Sounds better than google glasses!! What do you think Singapore would look like in 5 years time with all these technologies and IoT in placed?

Hey! Thank you for the support!
Well, Singapore has always been on the ball with technology, as can be seen by the emerging trends of new technology that are being adopted, I wouldn’t be surprised if Singapore roads were flooded by Teslas and other high-tech, electric cars in 5 years, maybe at that point of time most of our commercial buildings would be digitally integrated, just like how Beijing is right now! Lets wait and see!

Hey Jason, great post! From my point of view, you have listed down most of IoT that I presume are the most applicable for daily usage such as digital locks and wearables such as smart watches. Well for me I personally think that the Tesla autopilot is one of the coolest innovations although it may pose a certain risk for many. It will cause many to feel uncomfortable and insecure as you’re putting yourself at a certain risk but this is because not many are using such technology! If every car on the road is all on autopilot, it’ll just look like a norm and I believe it will significantly minimise the insecurities people have.

Hey Russell!
You and I have the same vision of how Singapore will turn out in the future! I’m thinking smart homes and autopilot cars everywhere!! It will most probably become a norm in the future while what we are having right now might just because a rare occurence 🙂
